UX Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO): a systematic guide for growing businesses

· 8 min read

Conversion Rate Optimisation is not button-colour testing. It is the systematic process of improving a website or app's user interface, interaction flow and information architecture to increase the percentage of visitors who complete a goal — a purchase, a newsletter sign-up or a demo request.

Define the goal before you touch the design

Every page should have one primary action. If you cannot name it, your visitors cannot either. Start by writing down the conversion each key page exists to produce, and how you will measure it.

  • Macro conversions: purchases, bookings, demo requests
  • Micro conversions: add-to-cart, form starts, pricing-page views
  • Conversion rate = completed goals ÷ visitors, tracked per journey

Find where the funnel leaks

Analytics tells you where people drop off; research tells you why. Combine funnel reports with session recordings, heatmaps and short usability tests to locate the exact moments of hesitation.

The three layers to inspect are the interface (clarity, hierarchy, trust signals), the interaction flow (steps, friction, errors) and the information architecture (can people find what they came for).

Prioritise by impact versus effort

Not every issue deserves a fix this month. Score each finding on expected revenue impact and implementation effort, then ship the high-impact, low-effort items first.

  • Quick wins: copy clarity, form field reduction, visible pricing
  • Medium bets: checkout restructuring, navigation changes
  • Strategic work: re-architecting key journeys

Test, learn, repeat

CRO is a loop, not a project. Form a hypothesis, make the change, measure against a baseline and keep what works. Small, compounding gains beat occasional big redesigns.
